Due to its proximity to Denver and
its high poverty level, Mexico has become one of the most visited
countries for our missionary teams.
With a population of 103.4 million (July 2002 est.), Mexico
is composed mainly of 9% European origin, 30% Indian origin
and 60% Mixed origin (Mestizos). The bottom 40% of the population
share only 11% of the wealth and are considered to live below
the Mexican poverty line. Many families live in total poverty
and children are compelled to work on the streets in order to
supplement the family income.
The Mexican standard of living is way below the US or Europe.
The minimum wage is 40 pesos per day, about £2.80, or $4 US
Dollars. There is little or no welfare state and no unemployment
benefit. Mexico is one of the 4 worst countries in Latin America
for income distribution. In 1994 a well-known magazine published
an article indicating that Mexico had the 4th highest number
of billionaires in the world, after the United States, Japan
and Germany. Many of these were created after the privatization
of banks and telecoms in the 1990s.
Official statistics are unreliable as it is officially claimed
that unemployment is only 2%-3%. A more realistic employment
estimate would be 40% unemployed or underemployed.
No question why we have so many people trying to immigrate illegally
into the United States. People in Mexico are desperate and hungry
for something that could get them out of this hopeless situation.
The goverment has failed them. It seems like at the end of each
term everything just gets worse and worse.
So, what can we do to help? It is not enough just trying to
secure our borders tighter. They are desperate people, and desperate
people will do desperate things to get out of their situation.
We must let Mexican people know that Jesus is the only answer.
Yes, we must also take food, but the most important thing is
the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ.
First Love Christian Church goes to many different impoverished
areas across from the border into Mexico, like Palomas and Juarez
Chihuahua, Agua Prieta Sonora, Tijuana, and Ensenada among others,
every month, visiting orphanages, jails and the local churches.
We take groceries, clothing and toys for the children, but above
all, the powerful redeeming message of the Blood of Christ,
the price that He already paid for us to live a better life.
Everytime we go we see powerful miracles, especially the miracle
of salvation, where many turn to the only and true loving God.
This is the greatest miracle where the population is Roman Catholic
(89%) Protestant (6%) and other religions (5%).
We want to encourage you to be part of this wonderful work that
God is doing in these end times.
Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful,
but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest
to send out laborers into His harvest." Matthew 9:37-38
And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel
to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved;
but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs
will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out
demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up
serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means
hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
Mark 16:15-18
